21.06.2025
Go-Ahead is entering the Australian market with a clear focus on delivering high-quality rail operations and officially launching its presence in Melbourne this August. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The company, known for managing large-scale transport systems in the UK, Ireland, the Nordics, and Singapore, has now set its sights on Australia and New Zealand. It plans to bid for commuter rail contracts and replicate its global success locally.

Kinetic, Australia’s leading bus operator, and part-owner of Go-Ahead, supports this move by offering regional insight and infrastructure. Their backing has helped accelerate Go-Ahead’s plans across the region.
Michael Contreras, appointed Executive Director of Rail Operations, brings extensive experience from Victoria’s Department of Transport and Metro Trains Melbourne. His local knowledge will help Go-Ahead navigate market challenges and community needs.
Go-Ahead builds strong teams with local expertise
Contreras sees public transport as a key factor in urban success and aims to strengthen social outcomes through effective railway operations. He believes Melbourne’s network can benefit from Go-Ahead’s hands-on operational culture.
Piero McCarthy, Business Development Director, brings two decades of experience, including leadership roles on London’s Elizabeth Line and the UK’s largest rail franchise, Govia Thameslink Railway. He will guide the company’s expansion across Australia and New Zealand.
Go-Ahead’s global success supports local growth
In partnership with Keolis, Go-Ahead runs GTR in the UK, overseeing four rail companies and handling 35% of national passenger journeys. This includes the Elizabeth Line, which now serves over 700,000 passengers daily.
The company aims to target complex commuter networks in Australia, not high-speed or intercity services. Instead, it will focus on urban areas where its operational strengths and community-first mindset are most valuable.
Go-Ahead also champions inclusion, accessibility, and environmental responsibility. Its sustainability strategy includes full electrification and a goal to reach Net Zero by 2045.
Safety remains a top priority. Go-Ahead uses staff apps for reporting issues and invests in mental health support, including suicide prevention programs.
Ultimately, Go-Ahead delivers more than transport—it brings partnerships, precision, and progress to every city it serves.
