The first phase of the project, funded with €206.8 million, will create a terminal capable of handling up to 1.6 million TEU on the Adriatic Sea. The overall project cost is €315 million, with additional funds provided by investors through a public-private partnership.

The new terminal facilities will be developed on the Piattaforma Logistica Trieste (PLT), a multifunctional terminal partially owned by the German logistics company Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (HHLA) since early 2021. The first phase includes a 400-meter container quay with a capacity of 500,000 TEU, featuring three railway tracks of 750 meters each. Future plans include expanding the number of tracks to nine.

The terminal is designed to handle up to 40 trains daily, significantly increasing its throughput. Construction is set to begin in 2024 and is projected for completion by 2029. This project is a vital step in HHLA’s strategy to strengthen its position in the Southeast European transport market and the Adriatic freight corridor.

In February 2024, METRANS, a subsidiary of HHLA, completed the acquisition of Croatian railway company Adria Rail, enhancing HHLA’s logistics network in the region. Additionally, in May 2023, METRANS launched a new regular route, connecting the Adriatic port of Rijeka to terminals in Budapest and Indjija, further strengthening logistics connections across the region.
