The FreightCar America acquisition of Southern Parts & Equipment adds a Georgia-based distributor of new, used and reconditioned railcar components to the manufacturer’s growing aftermarket business.

FreightCar America⁠ said the transaction closed on July 21, 2026. Founded in Monroe, Georgia, SP&E⁠ supplies repair shops, railroads, private car owners and other industrial customers.

Deal adds distribution and rail industry services

The acquisition expands FreightCar America’s aftermarket distribution capabilities beyond components alone. SP&E also supports customers with rail-industry consulting, inspections and project-related services, according to the official announcement.

President and CEO Nicholas Randall said:

“Southern Parts & Equipment is a highly complementary addition to our growing aftermarket platform. This acquisition further strengthens our ability to support customers with improved access to critical railcar components, while advancing our strategy to build complementary aftermarket capabilities that increase the value we deliver across the railcar lifecycle.”

The company did not disclose the purchase price. Chief Financial Officer Michael Riordan said FreightCar America expects the transaction to be immediately accretive, presenting that outcome as an expectation rather than a completed financial result.

Second aftermarket acquisition within seven months

The SP&E deal follows FreightCar America’s acquisition of Carly Railcar Components⁠ in December 2025. Carly distributes original-equipment railcar components, operates a core-exchange program for reconditioned parts and has a facility in Orange, Texas.

That earlier purchase focused on running-repair components, a category of frequently replaced parts. FreightCar America said it was intended to reduce lead times and expand the catalogue of ready-to-ship components.

The latest release did not provide an integration timetable or identify staffing changes. For now, the confirmed change is the addition of SP&E’s parts distribution, sourcing knowledge and related rail services to FreightCar America’s aftermarket platform.
