Freight and Passenger TSI in February

The Freight Transportation Services Index rose 1.5% in February from January. That was its second straight monthly increase. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics release showed Freight TSI 1.9% above February 2025.

The Transportation Services Index FAQ explains what the index measures. It covers the amount of freight transported by the for-hire transportation industry. That includes cargo moved by rail, trucks, inland waterways, pipelines and air carriers.

“The Freight TSI increased in February due to increases in air freight, rail carloads, rail intermodal, pipeline and trucking, while water volumes decreased,” BTS officials said in a press release.

Passenger Transportation Services Index trends

Meanwhile, the Passenger Transportation Services Index edged up in February. It gained 0.3% from January and 1% from February 2025’s figure.

The index measures passenger transportation volumes from local transit, intercity rail and air transportation carriers.

“The February increase in the Passenger TSI brought it to a new high for 2026, but 7.8% below the all-time high reached in January 2020,” BTS officials said.

Combined Freight and Passenger TSI results

The combined Freight and Passenger TSI rose 1.1% month over month in February. That Bureau of Transportation Statistics release also showed it 1.6% above a year-earlier level.
