FlixTrain fleet expansion and the 2028 high-speed rollout

Earlier this year, FlixTrain ordered 65 newly built, fully electric high-speed trains. The move is described in a Flix corporate press release and was also covered by Railway Supply. FlixTrain has since confirmed that the new units are due to operate from 2028 and will reach speeds of up to 230 km/h, forming the backbone of its next growth phase.

European build: Siemens locomotives and Talgo carriages

The trains will be produced in Europe, with Siemens supplying the locomotives in Germany and Talgo manufacturing the passenger carriages in Spain. That arrangement is also set out by Talgo. The new fleet is planned with a barrier-free interior, intended to provide step-free access and improve travel conditions for passengers with reduced mobility.

Refurbished trains from 2026 and a nationwide network in Germany

Before the new electric fleet enters service, FlixTrain plans to double the size of its existing fleet within the next two years. A number of refurbished trains are scheduled to enter service from 2026, which the company says will boost capacity ahead of the 2028 rollout.

The operator has also said the forthcoming fleet is intended to underpin a nationwide network in Germany, connecting major German cities and broadening the range of routes available to passengers. FlixTrain reports continued growth in demand, and says the planned investments are aimed at supporting a larger and more frequent service offering in the coming years.
