In the city of Dahod, India officially presented a new electric locomotive from Siemens Mobility, the first unit assembled at the local production site. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the facility to inspect the locomotive. Meanwhile, four additional units are currently under assembly.

The six-axle D9 electric locomotive (previously known as EF-9K) delivers 6.6 MW of power and can haul up to 4,500 tons at an average speed of 75 km/h.
According to the minister, over 90% of the components are manufactured in India. Siemens facilities in Mumbai, Nashik, and Aurangabad supply the parts, while final assembly takes place at a former Indian Railways depot in Dahod.
Electric Locomotive Developed Under India’s Largest Rail Contract
The locomotive is part of a ten-year contract for the delivery of 1,200 units. The agreement with Indian Railways was signed in 2023.
The total value of the deal, including 35 years of maintenance, is approximately $3 billion, making it one of the largest railway contracts in India’s history.
Localized Production and Environmental Upgrade
The project aligns with the “Make in India” initiative and demonstrates a high level of domestic production. This supports the national economy and reduces reliance on imports.
Modern electric locomotives help lower CO₂ emissions and improve freight transport efficiency. This is a key step toward the country’s sustainable development goals.
Indian Railways expects the new fleet to strengthen logistics infrastructure and accelerate transport along critical corridors.
