First ES3000 locomotives sent to modernize Ukrzaliznytsia’s fleet
25.08.2025
The first two ES3000 locomotives have been shipped to Ukraine, marking the start of a large-scale modernization of Ukrzaliznytsia’s shunting fleet and the integration of eco-friendly technologies. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Modernizing rolling stock with ES3000
The contract with Bulgaria’s Express Service OOD includes the delivery of ten battery-powered locomotives over the next two years. This is the largest order for battery locomotives in the manufacturer’s history.

Ukrzaliznytsia chose the ES3000 to cut diesel fuel costs and significantly reduce harmful emissions. The project also received financial support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, enabling a high-tech implementation of this initiative.
The locomotives meet modern environmental standards and are designed for operation on 1520 mm gauge tracks, making them the ideal solution for Ukraine’s railway infrastructure.
Training and preparations for ES3000 operation
Once the locomotives arrive, expected within two months, Ukrzaliznytsia will begin a training program for engineers and mechanics. The program will combine theoretical courses with practical sessions to ensure rapid adaptation to the new technology.
Deploying ES3000 units will reduce energy expenses and streamline shunting operations. These savings will create additional resources for investments in railway infrastructure upgrades and service improvements.

Located in Ruse, Bulgaria, Express Service OOD has been manufacturing battery and diesel shunting locomotives for over 20 years. The company also provides maintenance, repairs, and modernization services for rolling stock to clients across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
This project marks an important step for Ukraine toward sustainable development and the adoption of energy-efficient traction solutions.
