Federal transit funding for 2028 Olympics sought by California lawmakers
11.03.2026
Federal transit funding for 2028 Olympics is being sought by 36 members of California’s congressional delegation. They are asking the White House for about $2 billion for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

California delegation seeks transit support
In a letter sent to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, the lawmakers outlined their request. Also, they said the Los Angeles mega-region network must be safe and secure. In addition, it must be efficient and accessible for the event. “Like you, we collectively want to ensure that we have a safe, secure, efficient, and accessible transportation network in the Los Angeles mega-region for this global sporting event,” the legislators wrote in a letter to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. “We are convinced that delivering on this goal will require the full support of the federal government.”

LA Metro and regional transit partners
The request was signed by U.S. Sens. Alex Padilla and Adam Schiff. Meanwhile, 34 of California’s 52 House members also signed it. U.S. Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove led the effort. Her district covers areas west and southwest of downtown Los Angeles. At the same time, the letter described the purpose of the funding. It would support the efforts of LA Metro. It would also support regional transit partners in connection with the games.
Fiscal year 2027 budget request
The lawmakers also addressed the President’s fiscal year 2027 budget request. Separately, they said it will likely be the final chance for federal funding in time. They tied that point to the planning lead time for the 2028 games. “The lead time needed to plan for an event of the scale and scope of the 2028 games means that the President’s Fiscal Year 2027 Budget Request will likely be the final opportunity to ensure that federal transportation funding can be made in available in a timely manner in advance of the Games,” the legislators wrote. Still, as reported by Trains.com, the letter projects about 15 million ticket holders. They are expected to attend from around the world. For example, they are projected to contribute $18 billion to the U.S. economy.
