Fatal April 27 Train Crash Triggers Immediate Safety Overhaul Across Indonesia’s Rail Network
28.04.2026
A train accident in Indonesia on April 27 killed 14 passengers and injured 84 others. The collision involved a commuter train and the Argo Bromo Anggrek long-distance service at Bekasi Timur Station. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The crash occurred east of Jakarta. It was confirmed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and national rail operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident. On behalf of myself and the government, I extend my sincere condolences to all those affected,” said Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
According to ANTARA News, the intercity train was operating on the Jakarta–Surabaya route. It entered the same track as a commuter train stopped at the station. It then struck the commuter service from behind. The rear carriage of the commuter train was hit particularly hard. Most of the victims were located there.
Emergency work at the scene lasted between 8 and 12 hours. Rescue teams proceeded carefully at each stage. The aim was to ensure passengers could be evacuated safely. Around 240 passengers from the long-distance train were evacuated. Meanwhile, four people needed special assistance to be extracted safely. Medical personnel, rescue crews, representatives of the railway operator, and law enforcement agencies worked together at the site.

Rail safety after the train accident in Indonesia
The April 27 crash is considered one of the most serious recent accidents on Indonesia’s railway network. It also caused major disruptions to train operations in the Bekasi–Cikarang area. Several services were canceled or rerouted. The incident has again drawn attention to vulnerabilities in the rail system.
According to ANTARA, President Prabowo Subianto instructed that support for the victims be handled at the highest level. He also called for a full investigation into the causes of the accident. Together with Minister of the State Secretariat Prasetyo Hadi, he visited injured passengers receiving treatment in Bekasi. He asked that all those hurt receive the best available medical care.
The president also stressed the need for a swift and thorough review of what happened. He said identifying the causes was necessary to introduce effective preventive measures. In addition, he called for the investigation to be accelerated. The aim was to take concrete steps to avoid similar accidents in the future.
Level crossings and modernization measures
Following the accident, authorities highlighted structural problems in railway infrastructure. Level crossings were a particular concern. The president also referred to the technical condition of the network. He pointed to the need for modernization, including the condition of rolling stock currently in service.
One of the main issues cited is the presence of about 1,800 level crossings on Java. Many of them lack adequate protection. “From a technological standpoint, he also analyzed the year of manufacture of the trains. In addition, he called for measures to be taken at the approximately 1,800 level crossings, either by stationing supervisory personnel or by constructing overpasses, to eliminate the risk of accidents,” explained Minister Prasetyo Hadi.
The government plans to carry out a comprehensive assessment of these critical locations. The review will focus especially on densely populated areas such as Bekasi, a city in western Java. In this context, an overpass project in Bekasi has been identified as an urgent priority. “We will act immediately. The local government in Bekasi has proposed the construction of an overpass, and I have approved its implementation with direct support from the presidential level,” stated Prabowo Subianto.
As RailwayPro reports, the modernization effort is intended to improve traffic safety and reduce the risk of accidents. Its estimated cost is nearly 4 trillion Indonesian rupiah, equivalent to approximately 230–240 EUR million.
