Ukrzaliznytsia is considering expanding railroad routes to the Baltic ports, as reported by the railway portal Railway Supply.

Expanding Railroad Routes to the Baltic Ports

The Chairman of Ukrzaliznytsia’s board, Yevhen Lyashchenko, made this statement during a meeting with representatives of Lithuanian Railways.

UAB LTG Cargo Ukraine

According to the company’s leader, Lithuanian ports have significant untapped potential. Creating a competitive alternative route for transporting Ukrainian agricultural products and metal goods to Baltic Sea ports, as well as importing energy resources to Ukraine, could become a promising long-term strategy.

It is also important to relocate the control function, including phytosanitary control, to the cargo’s destination. This will contribute to safe and swift transit.

If the first stage is successfully implemented and clients show interest in regular shipments through the port of Klaipeda, the next step could be developing railroad connections between Ukraine and the Baltic ports within the European “Paths of Solidarity” initiative.

This will enable the establishment of a “green corridor” for goods from Ukraine to the Baltic ports and provide an additional strategic route for overcoming food crises and ensuring energy security for Europe and Ukraine.

To achieve these goals, a plan for implementing railroad projects is being developed in collaboration with European Union countries.

In June of this year, Ukrzaliznytsia began work on addressing the mentioned issues, and for the first time in history, the EU allocated funds to Ukraine for implementing railroad projects aimed at developing and expanding the most promising border crossings.
