Eurostar Unveils New Era of Double-Decker High-Speed Trains
22.10.2025
Eurostar aims to transform the way people travel by rail throughout Europe with new double-decker high-speed trains broadening its reach, increasing passenger numbers, and solidifying the company’s dedication to green transportation.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Eurostar Expands Fleet and Passenger Capacity
Eurostar will spend €2 billion ($2.17 billion) on 50 new Alstom-made double-decker trains. It should start taking the initial ones in January 2031 and open for business in May 2031.

Eurostar Celestia new fleet of trains will have 20 percent higher seats than existing Siemens e320 trains, providing travelers with better space, accessibility, and comfort. Wider leg space, newly designed interiors, and bike and wheelchair spaces shall be included on each of the new trains.
Eurostar CEO Gwendoline Cazenave explained the initiative aligns with the operator’s aspiration of transporting 30 million customers annually — from 19.5 million customers in 2024. Travelers, according to her, will have a “special trip” enjoying the latest amenities and the ability to choose upper or lower decks of the ship without any price distinctions.
Eurostar Invests in Infrastructure and Sustainability
Alstom will build the new trains in France, underscoring Eurostar’s emphasis on French production and energy efficiency. The new design achieves Europe’s sustainability targets by bringing together lower emissions and rapid speed.
Eurostar will also refurbish its Temple Mills depot in East London costing €80 million ($87 million) to sustain both Celestia and current e320 units. This refurbishing guarantees operational reliability and efficiency as the demand continued to rise for cross-Channel travel.
The UK’s St Pancras to Channel Tunnel high-speed line already has the same European clearance, allowing double-decker trains to travel safely. That gives Eurostar an advantage as new entrants — Virgin Group, FS Italiane, and Gemini Trains — make their market entry plans.
Through the embrace of double-decker technology, Eurostar solidifies its position as the leader of green international movement. Celestia fleet speaks of innovation, expansion, and new visions for the future of cross-border movement.
