Wumbulgal rail siding project to boost freight in NSW
27.07.2025
The Wumbulgal rail siding project in NSW will enhance freight efficiency and reduce delays for regional services, creating vital benefits for farmers and businesses across the Riverina. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Wumbulgal rail siding to improve freight flow
The Minns Labor Government awarded an $8.5 million contract to build a 1,500-metre siding between Griffith and Leeton. This upgrade will enable long trains to load or pass without blocking the main line.

Current operations force grain trains to occupy the main track for hours, slowing other services. By improving flow, the Wumbulgal rail project will significantly increase capacity along the Coolamon–Griffith corridor.

Officials plan the siding as a multi-user facility for all operators. It will also integrate with the upcoming Western Riverina Connect intermodal terminal, strengthening supply chains and regional productivity.
How the Wumbulgal rail project supports growth?
Laing O’Rourke will deliver construction, starting this month. This investment follows other upgrades such as $40 million track improvements between Junee and Griffith and an $8 million siding extension at Coolamon.
Minister Jenny Aitchison said efficient rail infrastructure supports farmers, businesses, and communities, and reflects the Government’s long-term strategy to build stronger regional freight networks.
Helen Dalton, Member for Murray, called the siding a “major win” for producers, improving safety and productivity while ensuring open access for all freight operators.
Government spokesperson Bob Nanva added that this investment moves goods faster, creates jobs, and enhances connectivity for Riverina communities.
Once completed, the siding will ease congestion, boost agricultural exports, and reinforce rail as a sustainable backbone for regional economic growth.
