Teams have set up site offices, installed fencing, and organized material zones along the rail corridor. At Thomas Street, piling has already begun, and large-scale building operations are just weeks away.

Works Transform Rail Corridor and Ground Infrastructure

Construction workers are relocating utilities and using excavators and earthmovers to ready the ground. These early-stage works ensure a stable base for the underpass structure.

The upcoming underpass will stretch around 450 meters, linking Cheltenham and Hammond roads with Princes Highway–Lonsdale Street. This new connection will reduce congestion in Dandenong’s CBD and improve safety for locals.

According to the Victorian Government, diverting heavy vehicles from Webster Street will help create quieter streets and a safer environment for nearby communities.

Works to Remove Level Crossing Set to Finish Early

Later this year, the crossing will be permanently closed to accommodate increased train services after the Metro Tunnel opens. The closure will mark another key step in the project’s delivery.

The new road underpass is now scheduled to open in 2026—two years earlier than planned. This advancement reflects strong coordination and efficient delivery of works.

Once the project is complete, Webster Street will be boom gate-free. Combined with upgrades on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines, Dandenong will eliminate all level crossings by year-end.
