After the groundbreaking ceremony in Afyonkarahisar on August 30, work began on the 508-kilometer high-speed line Ankara – Afyonkarahisar – Usak – Izmir in Turkey. After speaking in the center of Afyonkarahisar, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a video call to the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr. Adil Karaismailoglu, who began work on the project. It is reported by Railway Supply with reference to IRJ.

When completed in 2025, the 250 km/h line will cut travel time from Afyonkarahisar to Ankara to 1 hour 30 minutes, to İzmir to 2 hours and to Istanbul to 3 hours 30 minutes.

The British government announced in March that it would provide a loan of 2.1 billion euros to finance the line. The financing is being provided by Credit Suisse and Standard Chartered Bank and will be guaranteed by UK Export Finance (UKEF) through its Buyer Credit Scheme.

The construction of the line is divided into four sections:
Polatli (just south of the intersection where the Ankara-Istanbul and Ankara-Konya high-speed lines diverge) – Afyonkarahisar
Afyonkarahisar – Banaz (Usak)
Banaz (Usak) – Salihli (Manisa) and
Salihli (Manisa) – Menemen (Izmir).
Construction of the 151.2 km Polatli-Afyonkarahisar section started in 2013 but was suspended in 2018. ERG’s joint venture, which consists of three subsidiaries, ERG International, ERG Insaat Ticaret ve Sanayi (ERG Construction) and Sauerwein & Schaefer Bau (SSB), has been awarded the contract to complete the first section’s infrastructure, including railway construction, electrification and signaling.
