Privatisation has posed challenges for the government, particularly in supporting industries dependent on efficient rail transport. Public ownership is seen as a solution to improve network efficiency and address growing demands.

Western Australia’s Plan to Improve Freight Rail Efficiency

Key sectors such as agriculture and resource development are driving the government’s push for public control. Enhanced rail usage will help these industries meet increasing transportation demands while supporting economic growth.

The government anticipates significant benefits from public ownership, including job creation, reduced road congestion, and cost-effective transport solutions for commodities. Upgraded rail infrastructure will also enable more frequent services and better regional connectivity.

How Public Ownership Benefits Western Australia?

Western Australia’s Premier Roger Cook emphasized the importance of the initiative, highlighting plans to diversify the economy and create sustainable local jobs. Improved rail services could also boost tourism and community activities near rail corridors.

Arc Infrastructure, the current operator, has been formally notified of the government’s intention to enter negotiations. The Department of Transport will assess the economic and financial viability of transitioning the network back to public control.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti stated that rail improvements would lead to fewer trucks on roads, which is a key demand from local communities. She acknowledged the complexity of the process but stressed its necessity for the state’s ongoing prosperity.

In 2022, Western Australia secured A$200 million in funding for its regional rail freight network. The investment includes A$160 million from the Commonwealth and A$40 million from the state for four key projects.

The government remains committed to achieving its goals of regional development, economic growth, and industry support. Negotiations will play a critical role in determining the future of Western Australia’s freight rail network.
