FLIRT Akku is set to revolutionize regional travel in West Mecklenburg as ODEG and Stadler prepare to introduce battery-electric trains for greener and quieter mobility from December 2027. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Earlier this month, a battery-powered train arrived in Schwerin, showcasing the future of regional transport. Stadler and ODEG marked the occasion with a symbolic trip to Parchim, giving passengers a first look at the modern FLIRT Akku concept.

FLIRT Akku Brings Sustainable Rail Solutions

ODEG has ordered 14 units to serve lines connecting Schwerin, Rehna, Ludwigslust, and Parchim. Seasonal routes will reach popular lakeside destinations such as Waren (Müritz), Malchow, and Plau am See, where electrification is limited.

These trains can charge batteries under existing wires and switch seamlessly to battery mode when needed. With a range of at least 80 kilometers, FLIRT Akku ensures cost-effective service without major infrastructure investments.

Passenger Comfort and Regional Impact

Each two-car unit offers 98 seats, step-free access, and multi-purpose areas for bicycles and wheelchairs. Passengers will enjoy free Wi-Fi and modern information systems, making regional travel both convenient and comfortable.

The trains will undergo maintenance at ODIG’s upgraded workshop in Parchim and display Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania’s official colors. Stadler confirms a top speed of 140 km/h and improved acceleration for efficient journeys.

Stadler CEO Jure Mikolčić described the project as a new era of climate-friendly mobility. ODEG’s Stefan Neubert praised the fleet for quiet operation and passenger comfort, calling it the ideal traction concept for the region.

With FLIRT Akku, Germany moves closer to sustainable transport, bridging gaps in non-electrified networks while avoiding costly full electrification projects. This step reflects a balanced approach to innovation and environmental responsibility.
