Crews also lowered the rail line under Green Street bridge and rebuilt the bridge along its original alignment to accommodate double-stacked trains.
Accessibility improved significantly through new pathways, ramps, lifts, and stairs. A new western car park and 35 security cameras now enhance safety and convenience.
Local Economic Impact of Wangaratta Station Upgrade
The Inland Rail project created 1,650 jobs, including 59 First Nations workers and 176 young adults. Of these, 488 workers were from Wangaratta itself.
More than 346 businesses secured $161.3 million in contracts, with $18 million directed to 43 companies based in Wangaratta. These firms provided services such as plumbing, catering, and traffic control.
Wangaratta Station’s Role in Inland Rail’s Future
Wangaratta Station serves as the flagship for Tranche 1 of the Beveridge to Albury project, which upgraded 262 kilometers of existing rail.
Track adjustments were also made under the Murray Valley Highway at Barnawartha North and at bridges in Glenrowan and Seymour-Avenel Road.
Tranche 2 construction is already underway and will complete the Victorian portion of Inland Rail, connecting Melbourne and Brisbane more efficiently.
According to Inland Rail CEO Nick Miller, the project not only delivers new infrastructure but creates long-term opportunities for local workers and businesses.
Federal Minister Catherine King emphasized that Inland Rail will support Australia’s growing population by moving goods faster and more reliably.
Senator Lisa Darmanin called the Wangaratta Station reopening a major milestone for the community and the broader Inland Rail project.
