VHA is rebuilding a long-distance train inspired by VIA Rail’s 1980s era using refurbished Canadian National and Canadian Pacific cars, combining historical accuracy with working rail quality.

The initial consist includes locomotive FP9A 6539, baggage car 9604, and Dayniter coaches 5700 and 5714. All carry the distinctive blue and yellow VIA colors and evoke the golden age of Canadian rail.

Restoration continues on several other acquired cars. VHA plans to expand the consist in time for VIA Rail’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2028, aligning historical value with national pride.

During the June 25 event, the restored train was positioned beside modern VIA Rail equipment, creating a visual bridge between past and present for attendees and staff alike.

Though the VIA Heritage Train is not yet open to the public, VHA expects that to change as the milestone anniversary approaches, aiming to make the exhibit more accessible.

As 2028 nears, both VHA and VIA Rail are preparing to offer a truly immersive and nostalgic rail journey. This initiative connects generations through Canadian railway heritage.
