The project aims to produce a comprehensive strategy focused on investment measures, logistics solutions, and environmentally sustainable technologies for both freight and passenger transport.

CAF will provide $250,000 in non-repayable financial support to develop long-term planning tools and strategic frameworks for the railway sector.

CND will oversee the project’s administrative implementation and coordinate all activities in collaboration with the transport ministry.

Uruguay Invests in Railway System Modernization

The initiative targets the restoration of the national railway network, enhancing its appeal and linking it with key seaports to boost regional trade.

Planned measures also support passenger service development and aim to better connect urban centers with economic hubs across the country.

Uruguayan authorities emphasize the importance of integrating railway services into a unified transportation system that fosters long-term mobility and economic growth.

Uruguay Launches Project with Focus on Sustainable Growth

The first step may involve reopening the reconstructed double-track section between Montevideo and the city of Progreso, which is ready to support regular service.

This line could serve as a pilot project showcasing the railway’s potential as a critical component of national mobility and international logistics.

By implementing the plan, Uruguay expects to attract private investment, create new jobs, and strengthen its position in the regional transportation market.
