UN urges Russia to unblock Ukrainian ports
11.05.2022
A full-scale military invasion of the Russian Federation into the territory of Ukraine and the blocking of Ukrainian ports is fraught with the economic collapse of agriculture in Ukraine, a country that feeds 400 million people worldwide.
This was stated by the Executive Director of the UN World Food Program David Beasley, reports the railway magazine Railway Supply.
“So we say to Russia: we will have famine all over the world if we do not open these ports and give passage to help people around the world. This is a critical issue for Ukraine. And most importantly, this is a critical issue for the rest of the world over the next 8-12 months and next year,” the official stressed, speaking at the High-Level International Donor Conference on Ukraine, which is taking place in Warsaw.
He explained that if the ports are not opened right now, then the crops harvested in July and August will have nowhere to store, because the elevators and storage facilities are full. David Beasley emphasized that in this case the consequences would be worse than the rise in food prices, fuel prices, the cost of the freight observed today.
As previously reported, about 4.5 million tons of grain are blocked in Ukrainian ports. At the same time, it became known that the aggressor country was exporting grain from the occupied territories of Ukraine. Although Russia denied it later. So far, it is known that occupiers have taken out about 400 000 tons of grain from Ukraine.
