The C44ESACi locomotive was unveiled on June 17 at UGL’s Broadmeadow plant in New South Wales. Developed in partnership with Wabtec, it represents the next generation of fuel-efficient rail technology tailored to Australian conditions.

Pacific National will operate the new Class 94 locomotives on key intermodal routes between Western Australia and the east coast, as well as along the eastern seaboard. These trains will haul 1,500 to 1,800 meters of container freight.

In 2021, UGL secured a framework deal to deliver up to 123 of these locomotives, with a confirmed initial order of 50 units. Each one is designed to cut annual CO₂ emissions by 300 tonnes, translating into a total reduction of about 15,000 tonnes.

The Evolution Series units meet US EPA Tier 3 emission standards, offering a cleaner, more efficient option for diesel-powered rail. Their entry into service marks a strategic shift toward greener freight logistics.

UGL Drives Sustainable Rail Development

By integrating advanced engine technology and local engineering, UGL has positioned itself as a key player in modernizing Australia’s freight rail sector. These locomotives were designed to reduce fuel use and environmental impact.

The partnership with Wabtec also strengthens UGL’s commitment to domestic manufacturing and innovation. Both companies aim to accelerate Australia’s transition to low-emission transport solutions.

UGL and Wabtec Partnership Builds Rail Industry Future

Peter Thomas, Wabtec’s Regional Senior Vice President, stated that the project symbolizes more than progress—it’s a commitment to building the future of Australian rail through collaboration and technology.

With this rollout, UGL is not only expanding its product capabilities but also setting new industry standards for performance and sustainability in freight transportation.
