Turkish-made electric train will start running trials in August

The Turkish-made electric train will start running trials in August 2021, and by the end of the year it will switch to passenger transportation after passing certification, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Adil Karaismailoğlu said during a visit to the Turkish Railway Vehicles Industry Inc.

In December 2020, the minister opened the serial production of domestic trains. Turkey plans to export these electric trains to the countries of the European Union in 2023. Trains meet TSI standards and their speed has been increased from 160 km/h to 200 km/h, reports Railway Supply magazine citing Turkish Railway Vehicles Industry Inc.
Sakarya has become an important industrial center in the region and will support the development of railway transport through the merger of three companies (Tülomsaş, Türasaş, Tüdemaş) into one industrial company, which provides the production of various parts of railway vehicles.
“We have received a new impetus in the production of railway systems in our country and started a new step in national production through the reorganization of departments,” which now employs about 4000 skilled workers.

Mass production of Turkish electric trains is expected to begin in the last quarter of this year, and by the end of the year, Türasaş will begin developing mainline electric locomotives, hybrid locomotives and commuter trains, with prototypes already underway.
As part of the strategy of national projects, the design and production of the first prototype of a domestic train was carried out at the Türasaş Sakarya plant.
The new train will be able to move at a speed of 160 km/h, and future high-speed trains, which are currently being designed, will reach a speed of 225 km/h.
Türasaş Sakarya will manufacture 32 electric trains to be used on the Gaziray suburban line in Gaziantep. The plant will increase localization by 80 percent during mass production, compared to the 60 percent localization used to develop the prototype. The first order includes the delivery of 19 five-car trains (95 wagons).
To date, the Turasas plant has manufactured 2,300 railcars and provided repair and maintenance services for more than 38,490 passenger rail cars for TCDD, which has enabled Turkey to reduce “external dependence on rail transport, making a significant contribution to the national economy,” the minister said.
The Türasaş Sakarya Regional Office, in cooperation with Sakarya University and Uludağ University, began in 2010 the construction of a climate test tunnel for testing air conditioning systems of railway vehicles. In the same year, the production of diesel trains (DMU) began.
