Mainly, it transports fruits, grains, frozen seafood, electronic components, mechanical parts, as well as minerals and electric cars.

This infrastructure plays a vital role in Laos’s economy, providing access to the sea and addressing logistical challenges due to its mountainous terrain.

For China, the route is strategically important for rail connectivity with Southeast Asia.

The project is part of the Belt and Road Initiative, with a total cost of $5.9 billion.

China provided significant financing, and Laos obtained a loan from the China Exim Bank.

The countries established a joint venture responsible for construction and operation.
