These tests aim to demonstrate the reliability and efficiency of the new transportation vehicle and its technology, contributing to the development of a more sustainable railway transportation system.

The FCH2Rail demonstration train operates using fuel cells and battery packs and can also run on the electrified sections of the line using the overhead contact line.

This project is a collaborative effort involving Adif as the infrastructure administrator, Renfe as the operator, and CAF as the manufacturer, retrofitting the CIVIA 463 train.

Partners in the project include the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Toyota, the National Hydrogen Center (CNH2), Infrastructure Portugal (IP), and Stemmann Technik (STT).

Initiated in early 2021, the project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2024.

Its budget amounts to €14 million, including €10 million in funding from the European Clean Hydrogen Partnership.
