Despite successful hydrogen train trials in the region, the reported small order volume raised concerns among manufacturers, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The tender for hydrogen trains

The €60 million ( $65 million) tender in the Netherlands was withdrawn after more than a year without offers.

In November 2022, the Groningen province and Dutch railway company Arriva, serving non-electrified lines in the northern region, announced a tender for four hydrogen trains.

Despite successful trials before the tender, the manufacturers were reportedly worried about the small order size.

Hydrogen is also a favored ‘green’ energy source in the northern Dutch province, utilizing local wind energy production.

Tatravagonka will supply 149 railway platforms

The local government aimed to replace all regional trains with hydrogen locomotives by 2035, though this decision may now be delayed.

Local authorities are considering leasing trains to meet their hydrogen park launch target by 2027.

In 2020, rolling stock manufacturer Alstom successfully tested its Coradia iLint trains between Groningen and Leeuwarden in the neighboring Friesland province.

Following successful trials, Deutsche Bahn ordered at least 40 units of Coradia iLint.

Groningen is the proposed base for Arriva’s cross-border railway project, connecting the northern Netherlands with Antwerp, Brussels, and Paris.
