TBL1+ Train Protection System Certified for Belgium’s Railways

The Signalling Company (TSC), a subsidiary of the Škoda Group, has introduced its certified TBL1+ system. This advanced train protection system is now approved for deployment across Belgium’s national railway network. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Collaborating closely with rail freight operator Lineas, TSC designed the TBL1+ system using its iEVC-RailOS platform. The upgrades aim to enhance the HLD77 locomotive fleet with TBL1+, ensuring compatibility with future ETCS functionality.

TSC’s TBL1+ system operates on standard computing hardware using the iEVC-RailOS platform. This innovative software has achieved Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL4), the highest safety standard in railway technology, ensuring maximum reliability.

Alexander Betis, Managing Director of TSC, highlighted the project’s significance, emphasizing Lineas’ pivotal role in this collaboration. He confirmed the ongoing upgrade cycle, including locomotive installations, recoveries, and approvals. By 2025-2026, these locomotives will be ready for seamless ETCS software upgrades.

The iEVC-RailOS platform revolutionizes fleet management, simplifying upgrades while reducing costs. It optimizes hardware usage, saves space, and facilitates ETCS integration. Future advancements, including ETCS Baseline 3 to 4 compatibility, are also supported.
Bruno Vanlede, Lineas’ Fleet Management Head, praised the efficiency of the iEVC-RailOS platform. He highlighted its ability to eliminate traditional, costly vehicle upgrades while offering access to versatile applications through certified RailOS partners.
TSC plans to finalize its ETCS certification in 2025, enabling a smooth transition to fully compliant ETCS systems. This development ensures enhanced safety and interoperability across Europe’s rail networks.
