Two massive tunnel boring machines (TBMs) recently arrived at Pyrmont Station after cutting through a 2.3-kilometre tunnel from The Bay. They will spend five weeks in the cavern before starting the final stretch toward Hunter Street.

The TBMs navigated under Johnstons Bay and within 25 metres of the Anzac Bridge, drilling through the challenging Luna Park Fault Zone. This breakthrough represents one of the most complex phases of Sydney Metro West construction.

Both TBMs reached the cavern on the same day, only five hours apart, making it the second double breakthrough for this project. The first occurred in December 2023 at the future Five Dock Station.

Sydney Metro Unlocks Pyrmont Development Potential

Sydney Metro officials said the Pyrmont precinct will boost connectivity and transform the western harbour foreshore. The area will sit near the Harbourside precinct, Sydney Fish Market, and Blackwattle Bay.

The new development will include five levels of retail and commercial space in the podium, topped by 160 residential apartments. Its design integrates with the metro station, creating a modern urban hub for residents and businesses.
