At its April 24 session, the Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission approved a Project Development and Environment (PD&E) Study for the Sunshine Corridor. This marks a key step toward better connectivity across the region.

The proposed rail corridor will link SunRail’s commuter lines with Brightline’s intercity network. This east-west route will enhance access between major attractions, residential areas, and Orlando International Airport.

Sunshine Corridor to Serve Florida’s Top Travel Hubs

The Sunshine Corridor will connect riders to some of the most visited places in Central Florida. These include Disney Springs, Universal Orlando, and the Orange County Convention Center.

Travelers will also benefit from direct rail service to Orlando International Airport. As a result, both long-distance and regional passengers can enjoy a more efficient, car-free travel experience.

The project aims to improve mobility for residents and tourists by linking key entertainment, commercial, and hotel zones through high-capacity rail.

FDOT to Lead Study with Broad Public-Private Support

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will manage the PD&E Study. This includes evaluating the corridor’s technical feasibility, environmental risks, and funding strategies.

FDOT District Five Secretary John E. Tyler confirmed the agency’s commitment. He said this project is a major opportunity to modernize infrastructure and strengthen regional partnerships.

Strong support from the public and private sectors signals a unified effort to meet rising transit demands. The corridor stands to become a vital part of Florida’s multimodal transportation network.

By improving access to major destinations, the rail corridor will help reduce road congestion, encourage sustainable travel, and support the area’s tourism-driven economy.
