Stadler to Manufacture Specialized Locomotives for the Paris Metro
24.10.2024
Stadler has received its first order to manufacture specialized locomotives for the Paris metro. This significant step helps the company expand its role in transportation technology globally. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Paris transportation authority (RATP) has ordered 12 hybrid locomotives from Stadler, with an option for two more. These locomotives feature a hybrid power system that uses contact rails and batteries. This design increases the operational flexibility and efficiency of the locomotives.

The new locomotives will tow trains weighing up to 120 tons at speeds of up to 40 km/h. Stadler plans to use them for train towing and infrastructure maintenance on the Paris metro system. They will operate on all 14 metro lines, including automated routes, during both maintenance and regular service hours.
From 2027, these Stadler locomotives will join the current fleet of 28 specialized electric locomotives. The existing locomotives were produced by French companies Alstom and CFD between 1985 and 2005. Following CFD’s acquisition by the Spanish company CAF in 2008, production of similar locomotives continued.
It is also notable that in 2017, CAF signed a similar contract to supply hybrid locomotives to Paris metro. However, CAF has delayed deliveries for five years, raising concerns. The first CAF locomotive is currently undergoing certification, adding more uncertainty around delivery schedules.
The Stadler contract helps Paris metro modernize its rolling stock and improve operational efficiency. Stadler has established itself as a reliable transportation industry partner and is strengthening its presence in the international market. The introduction of hybrid locomotives will enhance both the efficiency and reliability of the Paris metro system.
