Swiss company Stadler Rail signed a contract with Metropolitano de Lisboa to deliver 24 new three-car ML-24 trains. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Lisbon needs these new trains to expand its metro system and replace aging rolling stock, which no longer meets modern standards. Each train will be 49.6 meters long, allowing passengers to move freely through the train, ensuring comfort and safety.
These new trains will feature a GoA2 automation level, boosting operational efficiency and minimizing human error.
The tender was announced on November 30, 2023, with an initial bid price of €138 million. A significant part of project funding will come from the European Union and the Environmental Fund, managed by Portugal’s Ministry of Environment.
All units are set for delivery within 54 months from the contract signing, emphasizing the importance of meeting strict timelines.
Chinese company CRRC Tangshan also competed for the contract with Stadler Rail, underscoring international interest in this project. Notably, Stadler already has experience working with Metropolitano de Lisboa: in 2021, the company signed a contract to supply 14 three-car ML-21 trains for the Circle Line. This contract was valued at €114 million, and the first train has already arrived in Lisbon for testing.
These new trains will help meet growing demand for public transportation services and represent an important step toward modernizing Lisbon’s metro network.
