Stadler Selects Technotrans for Transformer Cooling in Desert Trains
24.07.2025
Stadler has chosen Technotrans to supply advanced transformer cooling systems for ten next-generation intercity trains designed for Saudi Arabia’s demanding desert climate. The partnership focuses on enhancing performance in extreme heat conditions. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Technotrans Delivers Cooling Innovation for Stadler

Technotrans developed a 50-kilowatt active cooling system to replace standard passive methods that fail in hot environments. The solution integrates a compressor-based refrigeration unit, ensuring stability, light weight, and compatibility with cooling for diesel fuel and sensitive electronics.

The contract is worth about €10 million ($10.9 million) and includes an option for ten more systems. Deliveries will start in early 2026. The trains will measure around 179 meters and seat up to 313 passengers, according to Technotrans.
Stadler Strengthens Role in Saudi Railway Market
Earlier this year, Stadler signed a deal with Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) for ten diesel intercity trains, also with an option for ten more. The agreement, valued at 600 million CHF ($685 million), requires customized designs for the desert climate.
Stadler aims to deliver trains approximately 175 meters long, offering 320 seats. The company showcased a design featuring a cab similar to the Giruno (RABe 501) model when announcing the project in February 2024.
By combining Technotrans’ expertise with Stadler’s engineering capabilities, the project enhances operational reliability and passenger comfort for travel in harsh desert conditions.
