The trains operate efficiently on alternating current lines of 15 kV and 25 kV. Additionally, they function seamlessly on direct current lines rated at 3 kV.
Expanding High-Speed Train Market Presence
Stadler’s SMILE model stands as its only high-speed design currently available. Its lowered floor ensures easy boarding from platforms at 550 mm and 760 mm.
Certified in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Italy, the trains meet strict standards. This versatility boosts their appeal across multiple European rail networks.
Switzerland’s national carrier SBB became the first SMILE customer back in 2015. Since then, SBB has ordered a total of 41 trainsets for its fleet.
Today, over 30 SMILE trains serve routes in Switzerland and extend into Italy. This success highlights Stadler’s growing influence in the rail market.
Stadler’s export deal with Westbahn marks a significant milestone for the company. It demonstrates strong demand for SMILE trains within the European Union framework.
Production in Bussnang gears up to meet Westbahn’s timeline for 2026 operations. Meanwhile, Stadler solidifies its reputation as a leader in rail innovation.
The SMILE trains offer cutting-edge technology and exceptional passenger comfort for travelers. Their adaptability to various power systems enhances operational flexibility across regions.
Westbahn’s decision to lease these trains underscores confidence in Stadler’s engineering expertise. Consequently, this deal paves the way for potential future exports.
This contract boosts Stadler’s visibility in the competitive rail sector. It also strengthens economic ties between Switzerland and Austria through rail collaboration.
With trains certified across four countries, Stadler eyes further expansion opportunities. Thus, the company positions itself as a key player in Europe’s rail industry.
Travelers on the Vienna-Villach route will experience modern, efficient rail transport soon. Westbahn and Stadler together set a new standard for regional connectivity.
By March 2026, these SMILE trains will transform Austria’s rail travel landscape. Ultimately, this partnership drives progress in sustainable transportation across Europe.
