Stadler Delivers First Class 99 Locomotives to the UK Network
14.06.2025
Stadler has delivered its first Class 99 bi-mode locomotives to the Port of Bristol, marking a significant milestone in the UK’s freight rail transformation. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The shipment follows a 2022 contract between Stadler, Beacon Rail, and GB Railfreight for 30 advanced Co’Co’ locomotives designed for flexible and sustainable transport across Britain.

The Class 99 model operates using overhead electric lines where available and switches to a powerful, low-emission Stage V diesel engine when needed, minimizing environmental impact.
Stadler’s new locomotives will be transferred to Leicester for extensive testing and final commissioning. Stadler Rail Services will manage maintenance and technical inspections.
Commercial operations are scheduled to begin by the end of 2025. The remaining 28 units are expected to arrive in phases through 2026.
Stadler Enhances UK Freight with Versatile Class 99 Design
Based on the proven Eurodual concept, the Class 99 was adapted for UK standards. It reaches speeds of up to 120 km/h and produces 6MW on 25kV AC electric lines.
Its 500 kN tractive effort enables efficient hauling across both electrified and non-electrified routes. This flexibility helps replace traditional diesel-only fleets and supports net-zero goals.
Inside the cab, drivers benefit from ergonomic seating, large front-facing windows, and integrated camera systems. These features ensure safety, comfort, and excellent visibility in all conditions.
Stadler Prioritizes Efficiency and Safety in New Fleet Rollout
The Class 99 integrates AWS and TPWS systems, meeting core UK rail safety regulations. Future enhancements will include European Train Control System (ETCS) compatibility.
By combining dual-mode power, advanced engineering, and reduced emissions, Stadler offers a next-generation solution for UK freight operators looking to modernize and decarbonize.
This delivery underscores Stadler’s commitment to innovation, reliability, and environmental responsibility in the evolving rail industry.
