A two-carriage train from the J series has arrived at the Britz depot, becoming part of the city’s upgraded rolling stock. A four-carriage train of the same series was delivered to the Friedrichsfelde depot in 2023.

The first test runs of the J series trains will take place in the coming months. Meanwhile, twelve trains from the JK series are currently undergoing tests.

Production Features of Stadler’s New Trains

The J series is designed for wide-gauge metro lines, specifically routes U5–U9. The trains have larger dimensions: the length of each carriage is 16 meters, and the width is 2.65 meters. Each carriage is equipped with three doors on each side.

Stadler has manufactured two- and four-carriage trains, totaling 344 units. These trains are produced at the company’s Berlin factory.

As part of a contract with BVG, the city’s transport operator, 1,500 trains are planned to be supplied. Currently, 484 units have been ordered, but further deliveries depend on the stability of production.

Economic Challenges and Launch Delays for Stadler Trains

The company has faced financial difficulties due to the unstable international situation and delays with software development. These factors have affected the timeline for the trains’ entry into operation.

Initially, the launch was planned for 2022, but it has now been postponed to September 2025. Despite these setbacks, Stadler continues to modernize Berlin’s public transport system.

The new trains are expected to improve passenger comfort, reduce waiting times, and enhance service quality on the busiest metro lines.
