Spain opens the Pajares high-speed railway line

The Spanish government has officially inaugurated Pajares, a segment of the Madrid-Asturias high-speed line, reducing travel time by over an hour between Madrid and Asturias, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The Pajares Bypass project involves the opening of a 50-kilometer tunnel costing $4 billion, covering 80% of the route.

This route will allow crossing the Cantabrian Mountains in less than 15 minutes, further shortened with the introduction of Avril trains in the fourth quarter of 2024.
According to the Spanish government, the Pajares project represents one of the most complex engineering works in Europe and the world.
The new railway line will be used for both passenger and freight transportation and involves diverse European financing.
The project received support, including 518 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund, as well as 121.6 million euros from the European Fund for Recovery and Sustainability (ERF).
The La Robla-Pola de Lena line comprises 12 tunnels and 10 viaducts, ranking as the seventh-largest railway tunnel in Europe.
Additionally, the infrastructure features a double-track electrified line with the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS level 2).
