Major Investments and Improvements Along the Route

The East Kilbride line will close from 25 January to 18 May for significant enhancements. ScotRail is working with Network Rail on a £140 million project that includes track upgrades, bridge replacements, and railway electrification. The new East Kilbride station will feature improved facilities, while Hairmyres station will gain two platforms and an accessible footbridge. Enhancements also include a new entrance at Clarkston and safer crossings at Busby and Giffnock stations.

Electrification from Glasgow to East Kilbride will reduce carbon emissions, aligning with Scotland’s sustainability goals. These developments will modernise the railway while improving reliability for passengers.

ScotRail Travel Alternatives During Line Closures

ScotRail will provide replacement bus services along the route during the closure. For stations without replacement buses, alternative transport options are detailed on the ScotRail website. Passengers are encouraged to explore nearby rail lines, like the Barrhead route, which will operate as usual. Additional carriages on these routes will accommodate increased demand, though peak times might remain busy.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail’s Customer Operations Director, said: “We know the inconvenience caused by major works and appreciate customer patience. Plan your journeys ahead and use available travel options for smoother commutes.”
