Renfe announced that it will exercise an option to purchase 101 additional Cercanías and Media Distancia trains before the end of the year. The company has already begun negotiations with manufacturers and is expected to sign contracts in the coming weeks. The operation is part of Renfe’s fleet renewal plan, which includes a global investment of 5.4 billion euros to buy 519 new trains. By the end of 2022, Renfe will exercise an option to purchase 101 additional Cercanías and Media Distancia trains as part of the fleet renewal plan of the company’s Strategic Plan.

Following government approval to increase this year’s debt limit by 879.3 million euros in an attempt to streghten public transport, Renfe has begun negotiations with manufacturers to complete the purchase of additional trains, contracts for which will be submitted to the Board of Directors and are expected to be signed in the coming weeks. Of the 101 additional trains that Renfe will buy, 69 are expected to be Cercanías large capacity trains (made by Stadler and Alstom) and 32 Media Distancia trains (made by CAF).

Renfe is undergoing a deep modernization of its fleet to have a more modern and reliable train fleet that adapts to customer needs.
