Railway Modernization: A Step into the Future
04.12.2024
The Polish company PKP Linia Hutnicza Szerokotorowa (LHS), part of the state-owned PKP group, is actively expanding its business. Railway modernization between Poland and Ukraine aims to meet expected post-war transportation growth. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
In the first ten months of this year, PKP LHS transported over nine million tons of cargo. The company expects to reach eleven million tons by the end of the year, exceeding last year’s figures. A significant portion of this cargo includes iron ore imported from Ukraine, accounting for 43% of the total volume.

Eighty-five percent of all cargo transported along this line originates from Ukraine. However, the company anticipates that the flow of goods will reverse after the war ends. The current increase in building material shipments from Poland to Ukraine supports this expectation.
New Investments in Railway Modernization
To prepare for rising volumes, PKP LHS is investing in automated control centers. Two centers are already operational: one in Sławków, near Katowice, and another near the border town of Zamość.
A third center is under construction in Sędziszów, with plans for a fourth in Wola Baranowska. These projects aim to increase the railway’s capacity, enabling higher transportation volumes.
Prospects for Railway Modernization in Intermodal Transport
The company focuses on developing the intermodal segment, which is becoming increasingly important. It is considering purchasing new locomotives and platforms for container transport to optimize its logistics structure.
The broad-gauge line of PKP LHS reaches a container terminal in Sławków, which is set for expansion. This offers additional opportunities for increasing future cargo volumes.
Earlier, the company reported record-breaking transportation figures for the first half of 2024. These achievements underline the effectiveness of investments in infrastructure development and preparation for anticipated growth after the conflict concludes.
