Railway Innovations in Germany: Modernization of KISS Trains

German Railways (DB), in partnership with Stadler, has completed the modernization of 17 double-decker KISS electric trains acquired from the Austrian operator Westbahn in 2019, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
This deal, including trains with four and six cars, allowed DB to rapidly expand its fleet in response to the growing passenger demand.

The main modifications involved installing onboard ETCS version 3 systems, laying 25 km of cable, and replacing 2116 windows to enhance cellular radio communication.
Additionally, the train interiors were redesigned to feature multifunctional areas for bicycles, strollers, and wheelchairs, along with added luggage racks.
Trains, capable of reaching speeds up to 200 km/h, have now received operational approval in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, emphasizing the importance of innovation in the development of railway transport in the region.
