Purchase of Diesel Trains: Polregio Updates Its Fleet with Used Vehicles
31.10.2024
The Polish operator Polregio announced a tender for the purchase of diesel trains, focusing on used models. This decision aims to modernize its aging fleet, which has been in service for 40 years. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Polish regional operator Polregio has announced plans to purchase up to 14 used three-section diesel trains. In the announced tender, the supplier will be selected based solely on the cost of rolling stock.
EBRD to Provide €300 Million for Electric Locomotives for Ukrzaliznytsia’s Fleet Upgrade
This decision relates to the increasing wear of the current trains, which have been in service for over 40 years. Polregio President Krzysztof Pietrzikowski noted that the company urgently needs to renew its fleet. Although the company acquired seven new electric trains from 2016 to 2023, this is not enough for a full modernization.
Purchase of Diesel Trains: Polregio’s Strategy for Fleet Modernization
Polregio’s management emphasizes that purchasing new trains is impossible without funding from European funds. Polregio actively collaborates with the Polish government, negotiating financial support for these investments. However, specific agreements have not yet been reached, which forces the company to seek more affordable options.
Polregio is not the only Polish operator deciding to update its fleet with used trains. In September, the regional operator Koleje Dolnośląskie also announced a tender to purchase seven used electric trains, which are expected to be delivered within a year. Koleje Wielkopolskie, in turn, announced plans in October to acquire two used diesel trains with similar delivery terms.
These purchases illustrate a general trend among Polish operators who prefer affordable modernization options. The aging fleet demands quick solutions, and used trains have become a viable option for companies constrained by limited budgets.
