Newag has handed over to PKP Cargo the first 12 six-axle dual-system electric locomotives Dragon 2, built at the Nowy Sącz plant in Lesser Poland Voivodeship. Railway Supply magazine writes about this with reference to zdmira.
The framework contract, signed in 2019, provided for the supply of seven electric locomotives equipped with a diesel generator module for operation on non-electrified lines (they have already been received), and 24 dual-system ones. In addition, the contract covers the supply of spare parts and training of employees.

The new dual-system locomotives will operate on lines electrified at 3 kV DC or 25 kV AC, 50 Hz in Poland, as well as the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
This is not the operator’s first order with Newag. Earlier, in 2018, PKP Cargo purchased three Dragon 2 electric locomotives. Thus, by 2024, the number of these locomotives in the PKP Cargo fleet will increase to 34 units.
All electric locomotives comply with European specifications for interoperability (TSI) and are characterized by low noise levels and high energy efficiency. They are equipped with the European ETCS level 2 train control system and are designed to drive freight trains weighing more than 3000 tons.
