Poland is demonstrating a record surge in railway investments, signing contracts worth $3.5 billion — nearly four times more than the previous year. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Poland Expands Rolling Stock Procurement

Railway operators signed contracts totaling $3.5 billion, exceeding the combined value of all deals from 2017 to 2023. These figures were reported by Rynek Kolejowy.

The growth was mainly driven by PKP Intercity and Masovian Railways. Their investments have become a key force in modernizing the sector.

PKP Intercity ordered 300 passenger cars for $1.14 billion, with an option for an additional 150 units. The company also purchased 63 Griffin 200 electric locomotives from Polish manufacturer Newag, with an option for 32 more.

Later, PKP Intercity signed another agreement with Newag for 35 diesel-electric trains worth $730 million. This significantly strengthened the operator’s fleet.

Manufacturers and Operators Strengthen Positions in Poland

Masovian Railways acquired 50 Flirt electric trains from Stadler Rail for $862 million. The deal was partially financed by the European Union. Three months later, the operator placed another order with Newag for 25 Impuls II trains.

In total, Polish operators in 2024 purchased 130 electric trains, 300 passenger cars, 63 locomotives, and 35 multiple units. These volumes reflect growing confidence in the national railway infrastructure.

Among manufacturers, Newag led with $1.56 billion in contracts. H. Cegielski – Poznań followed with $920 million, while Stadler Rail came third with $710 million in orders.

Poland is actively investing in the development of its railway sector, focusing on modernization, sustainability, and support for domestic manufacturers.
