PKP PLK automates railway track diagnostics and monitoring
25.08.2025
PKP PLK is implementing innovative technologies to automate track inspections and diagnostics, aiming to improve safety and reduce network maintenance time. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

PKP PLK invests in automation and artificial intelligence
PKP PLK signed a framework agreement with GRAW, part of the Goldschmidt Group, to supply advanced equipment and software for data analysis. Over the next eight years, the company will receive nine inspection machines, 23 servers, and 60 workstations.

These machines, equipped with cameras, sensors, and AI-powered software, will conduct inspections in a fully automated mode. This approach eliminates manual checks and accelerates the process of identifying infrastructure defects.
PKP PLK accelerates infrastructure digitalization
The first inspection machine, featuring two servers and seven workstations, will be delivered by 2029. PKP PLK plans to test the equipment at a dedicated pilot site to evaluate its performance and reliability in real-world conditions.
The systems will analyze track geometry, monitor the condition of turnouts and ballast layers, and measure rail temperatures. The integration of AI will allow algorithms to adapt and deliver increasingly accurate diagnostics with every inspection.
Additionally, the contract includes five years of technical support and software updates, ensuring the stability and longevity of these systems.
Innovations in diagnostics are advancing beyond Poland as well. For example, Italy’s RFI is testing unmanned platforms for high-speed line inspections.
Experts believe PKP PLK’s projects are setting new standards for infrastructure monitoring. This approach reduces costs, enhances safety, and ensures early detection of risks affecting railway operations.
What is PKP PLK?
PKP PLK is Poland’s national railway infrastructure manager, responsible for maintaining, modernizing, and managing the country’s rail network.
When will PKP PLK deploy the first automated machine?
The first machine will be delivered by 2029 and tested at a specialized pilot site before full-scale deployment.
