PKP Intercity has opened bids for 42 high-speed double-decker EMUs, marking its largest investment in long-distance trains and the first of its kind in Poland’s rail history. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Two manufacturers, Alstom and Stadler, submitted offers for the tender. Alstom’s total bid stands at approximately €1.6 billion, including €966.5 million for production and €654 million for 30 years of maintenance. Stadler proposed nearly €1.7 billion, with €939 million for the trains and €769.7 million for service.

Both Alstom and Stadler operate factories in Poland—Alstom in Chorzów and Stadler in Siedlce. These sites will produce the trains locally, supporting regional employment and industrial capacity.

Each new train will carry at least 480 passengers. The layout includes first- and second-class seating, a quiet zone, family area, luggage compartments, and bike storage. Comfort features such as reclining seats, USB ports, WiFi, air conditioning, and digital information displays will be standard.

All trains will run at speeds up to 200 km/h. They are planned for routes connecting Warsaw with Gdańsk, Kraków, Wrocław, Łódź, and more. Delivery of the first units is expected within 3.5 years.

Advanced safety systems—ETCS Level 1 and 2, GPS, onboard diagnostics, and CCTV—will be integrated. The EMUs will also be certified for cross-border operation in the Czech Republic.

PKP Intercity Drives Future Rail Growth Through Strategic Investment

PKP Intercity forecasts 109 million annual passengers by 2030—a 60% increase from 2023. To accommodate this growth, the company is prioritizing fast, energy-efficient, and high-capacity rolling stock.

The new EMUs offer lower operating costs than locomotive-hauled trains. They reflect proven European models and will modernize Poland’s long-distance rail services.

Besides the current tender, PKP Intercity has committed over €3.9 billion to rolling stock upgrades. Newag is delivering 179 locomotives and EMUs valued at €1.8 billion. H. Cegielski has contracts worth €1.3 billion for 300 new carriages and the modernization of 172 more.

Pesa Bydgoszcz and Pesa Mińsk Mazowiecki will provide hybrid locomotives and refurbish 67 carriages for €235 million. PKP’s Remtrak facility is modernizing 150 carriages under a €353 million contract, while Opoczno and Opole are handling upgrades for 105 additional cars.

This wave of procurement signals PKP Intercity’s commitment to transforming intercity rail travel with sustainable, passenger-focused solutions built on domestic expertise and global standards.
