Amtrak will temporarily suspend Pacific Surfliner service north of Goleta from August 1 to 16, 2025, due to essential bridge reconstruction along the LOSSAN Rail Corridor. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Pacific Surfliner Suspension for Bridge Replacement Work

Pacific Surfliner impacted by La Cañada Honda Bridge works

The San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor Agency (LOSSAN) will carry out a 16-day closure to replace the 127-year-old La Cañada Honda Bridge. This vital steel viaduct spans Honda Creek in Santa Barbara County and supports both passenger and freight trains across three counties.

Because the bridge is a core part of the 351-mile corridor, officials are prioritizing its replacement to improve reliability and efficiency. The overhaul will eliminate speed restrictions and reduce emissions while supporting growing ridership.

Crews will work intensively to complete the project within the scheduled window. The closure is timed to minimize long-term service disruption and align with broader infrastructure modernization goals across California’s rail network.

Pacific Surfliner passengers to use bus connections during closure

During this temporary suspension, all Pacific Surfliner trains will start or end their journeys in Goleta. Passengers heading north must transfer to buses at Santa Barbara Station, while southbound riders will board buses from San Luis Obispo.

These buses will follow Route 17 and make stops at UC Santa Barbara, Solvang, Buellton, Santa Maria, and Grover Beach. However, Route 17’s regular schedule will remain unaffected by these additional services.

Trains 774 and 794 will have bus links for southbound travel, and trains 761 and 779 will offer buses heading north. Passengers should plan ahead and check for real-time updates.

Normal rail operations are expected to resume on Sunday, August 17, 2025. For further details and updated schedules, visit Travel Advisories | Pacific Surfliner.

LOSSAN encourages passengers to remain informed and patient during this critical improvement effort. While temporary inconveniences are expected, the long-term benefits for riders and regional transit efficiency are significant.
