The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is overseeing 19 projects funded under the Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Programme. This initiative, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aims to deliver safer, faster, and more reliable rail services nationwide.
Among the notable projects, Amtrak’s Mid-Atlantic OCS Replacement will receive $397.25 million to upgrade an 18-mile catenary system. Additionally, Washington Union Station will benefit from $24 million for expansion efforts, enhancing its capacity and passenger experience.
Regional Benefits of Northeast Corridor Rail Upgrades
The Northeast Corridor Rail Upgrades bring transformative benefits to key states like New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. In New Jersey, $13.42 million will fund upgrades to a 1930s-era catenary system, ensuring modernized energy efficiency and reliability.
Connecticut’s Hartford Station Relocation Project will receive $2.56 million for planning a new station and multimodal hub. These investments not only improve rail operations but also foster economic growth in connected regions.
Earlier in 2024, the Federal Transit Administration announced $631 million for new rail cars to complement infrastructure upgrades. Together, these efforts align with the administration’s broader $66 billion plan to improve passenger rail across the US.
