Berlin has seen a modernization landmark with the arrival of the new Stadler JK metro train, and a further 140 vehicles are scheduled for delivery later in the year to expand the network.

Stadler delivers latest rolling stock to Berlin

The first four-car trainset JK is already in service on line U2. It has seating for 309 people, a total power output of 540 kW and a maximum speed of 70 km/hr.

The trainsets were originally due to be delivered in 2022, yet delivery was deferred due to supply chain issues. As part of a framework contract, 484 J and JK type cars were ordered by BVG.

Operational and technical specifications in Berlin

The JK model stands at 2.4 meters in width, while J cars are going to be longer and wider — 16 meters and 2.65 meters respectively. So, they would feature extra room for occupants and more doors.

The trains are being built at the Stadler factory in Berlin, which is building at maximum rate. The J series are being tested and should be delivered during the summer of next year, boosting the capital’s fleet of metros.

The first trainset of the JK series was introduced on line U2 in 2025 and is in service.
