New HSR to Connect Xi’an and Shiyan in China
12.09.2025
China began a fresh round of construction, and track-laying for the HSR Xi’an — Shiyan in September 2025. The line would be 255.7 km long and would have a maximum speed of 350 km/h.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The line is being constructed under technically involved geological conditions, and tunnels and bridges are going to constitute 95% of the line. But tracks that are 500 meters long are being installed, and a rate of 12 kilometers per day is being achieved.

Connection with Other Routes
The new HSR line would link Shaanxi province capital Xi’an and Hubei’s Shiyan and interconnect with Wuhan — Shiyan line. Meanwhile, interregional travel would be boosted and travel times significantly reduced.
From now on travel from Wuhan to Xi’an would be only 2 hours 30 minutes and not five. The travel times for Xi’an-Shiyan would be less than one hour, hence the project has high strategic importance for regional development.
HSR in the National Network
As of 2025, the total length of high-speed railways in China was 48,000 kilometers. This accounts for about 70% of the globe’s total HSR. Expansion beyond that is a bid to interconnect cities with a population higher than 500,000.
When did track laying on the HSR Xi’an — Shiyan line begin?
The construction started on 8th September 2025 and the first stage consisted of building 500-meter lengths of track on a slab base.
How long will the trip on the new line take?
The travel duration between Shiyan and Xi’an will be less than an hour, and travel time to Wuhan will be just 2 hours 30 minutes.
What is the contribution of the HSR in China’s transportation system?
HSR constitutes the central part of the Chinese national railway network. It joins cities that have over 500,000 inhabitants and already covers 70% of global high-speed line length.
