Metro-North Railroad Unveils New Siemens Dual-Mode Locomotives for Sustainable Transit
02.11.2024
On November 1, 2024, Metro-North Railroad introduced the first of its dual-mode Siemens locomotives. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This innovation brings advanced technology, environmental benefits, and greater flexibility for commuter rail services.
Metro-North Railroad Unveils Eco-Friendly Locomotives
The new Siemens Charger dual-mode locomotives represent a groundbreaking addition to the Metro-North Railroad fleet. Units 301 and 302, the first in a $414 million order of 33 locomotives, offer a robust 4,200-horsepower diesel engine for use on non-electrified tracks.

These locomotives will run on electric power across 102 miles of third-rail territory, a significant improvement over the General Electric P32AC-DM models that only utilize electric power within a four-mile tunnel to Grand Central Terminal. With Tier 4 compliance, these engines are projected to reduce pollutants by over 85%.
Metro-North Railroad’s President, Catherine Rinaldi, emphasized the positive impact on the environment and commuting experience. Rinaldi noted that public transit helps combat climate change, making these new locomotives a valuable asset for a greener future. Commuters will benefit from more reliable, sustainable service, aligning with the railroad’s mission to enhance the rider experience.
The Investment Behind Metro-North Railroad’s Locomotive Upgrade
Metro-North Railroad’s fleet expansion includes 27 units funded by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and six from the Connecticut Department of Transportation. This allocation reflects the demand on diesel segments across New York and Connecticut. Siemens Mobility North America’s CEO, Marc Buncher, praised this venture as a pioneering effort in sustainable rail technology for North America. These locomotives, Siemens’ first dual-mode products in the region, demonstrate the company’s commitment to innovation, connecting communities with environmentally responsible solutions.
Manufactured at Siemens’ Sacramento, California, facility, the locomotives were awarded to Metro-North Railroad under a $414 million contract in 2021. Initial testing at the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, Colorado, will be followed by further tests on Metro-North tracks, ensuring they meet all safety and reliability standards.
In summary, the Metro-North Railroad’s Siemens Charger locomotives bring a major leap in operational flexibility and environmental benefits. With plans for full deployment by early 2025, these new units will serve as a foundation for sustainable transit across the New York Metropolitan region. This investment underscores Metro-North’s ongoing commitment to providing reliable, efficient, and environmentally conscious services for its riders.
