The Melbourne Airport Rail Project has taken a major step forward with the appointment of Merren McArthur as the independent Chair of its newly formed Steering Committee.

This appointment follows a Memorandum of Understanding between the Australian Government, the Victorian Government, and Melbourne Airport to advance the Melbourne Airport Rail Project through a unified leadership team.

McArthur brings a wealth of experience from the aviation and freight sectors, having served as CEO of Tiger Airlines and Virgin Australia Cargo, and as a director on major infrastructure boards.

Federal Minister Catherine King emphasized that McArthur’s leadership and deep transport knowledge will be essential in driving progress on the Melbourne Airport Rail Project after years of uncertainty.

Melbourne Airport Rail Project Gains Executive Expertise

The Steering Committee will benefit from McArthur’s extensive governance background. She has also held executive roles at Queensland Rail and the National Intermodal Corporation, ensuring she is well-prepared to oversee the next project phase.

Acting Victorian Minister Sonya Kilkenny welcomed the appointment, saying it aligns with the ongoing Sunshine Station rebuild—an early and vital stage in delivering the new airport rail service.

Unified Vision Drives Melbourne Airport Rail Project Forward

Under McArthur’s guidance, the committee will coordinate efforts between the government and airport stakeholders to ensure timely and efficient delivery. Her appointment marks a shift from planning to focused execution.

The project aims to meet growing transport needs and reduce road congestion by creating a direct and reliable rail connection between Melbourne’s city center and its international airport.

With unified leadership now in place, the long-anticipated airport rail link is expected to transition more quickly from concept to construction, benefiting travelers across Victoria.
